INVITING AND LISTENING TO THE BELL

When you’re a bell master and you want to invite the bell to sound, the first thing you do is bow to the bell. The bell is like a friend who helps you bring your mind back to your body. When mind and body are together, suddenly we’re in the here and now, and we can live our lives deeply.

If you have a small bell that fits in your hand, after you bow to the bell, take the small bell and hold it in your open palm. Imagine that your hand is a lotus flower with five petals, and the small bell is like a jewel in the lotus flower. While you hold the bell like this, you practice mindful breathing in and out. There’s a poem that helps you to bring your mind back to your body so that you can be truly present.

If you are not truly present in the here and the now, you can’t be a good bell master. So after having breathed in and out two times with this poem, you’re qualified to be a bell master.

Body, speech, and mind in perfect oneness,

I send my heart along with the sound of this bell.

May the hearers awaken from forgetfulness

and transcend the path of anxiety and sorrow.
